Introduction

The Waste Management Institute of New Zealand (WasteMINZ) is a non-profit organisation that was formed in 1989 to promote sustainable waste management practices for the benefit of all New Zealanders. Our primary function is to provide a forum for presentation and dissemination of information and to act as a facilitator for the waste management industry in New Zealand.

The organisation accomplishes these goals by hosting an annual conference, conducting regular workshops and seminars, publishing a newsletter titled Waste Awareness, sector groups, sharing information, and providing networking opportunities for our members. In addition, WasteMINZ works closely with other organisations that also have interests and goals in specialized areas within the waste management field.

The WasteMINZ also interacts with other similar waste management organisations at the international level, and is a national member of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA). WasteMINZ hosted the ISWA World Congress in 1997. This event, which was held in Wellington, New Zealand, attracted numerous international delegates.

Organisational Structure

WasteMINZ is governed by a Board of Directors that consists of six members that are elected from the organisation's financial members. The election of Board members is held annually, with three positions becoming open each year. An elected member remains on the Board for a period of two years any financial member of WasteMINZ can stand for election.

The Chairman of WasteMINZ is chosen from the elected Board members. The organisation employs full-time; Executive Officer, Sector Group Coordinator, Administration Officer and part-time Administration Assistant. Contact details for WasteMINZ are available here.
