WasteMINZ representatives joined with representatives
from RONZ, Zero Waste, and the Scrap Metal
Recycling Association to scope out the details the skills and knowledge
required in the resource recovery, solid waste, and scrap metal
recycling industries. This exercise was undertaken by the Extractives
Industry Training Organisation that has responsibility for developing
unit standards and qualifications in these areas. This project
was outlined to the solid waste sector of the industries at the
last WasteMINZ conference in Auckland.
The Scoping Report is the first step in the
process towards producing qualifications that will be registered
on the National Qualifications
Framework. The functions listed in the report are the basis for
selecting and developing unit standards – standards for assessing
competence. Some of the unit standards are already registered on
the Framework, others need to be developed, and this will be done
in batches starting with generic functions and roles. The units
will then be collated into qualifications relevant for people working
in the industry.
