What is composting?
Composting is the biological decomposition and stabilisation
of organic material to produce a hummus that is stable,
free of pathogens and able to be beneficially applied to
land. Some benefits of compost application include improved
soil fertility, texture and moisture retention, ultimately
producing a product that can be reintroduced to the economy.
Recyclable organic matter currently makes up over a quarter
of landfill waste in New Zealand. Diverting organic matter
into composting operations and eventual re-use is important
if we are to extend the life of our landfills. |
