Compost New Zealand - Membership and benefits
A WasteMINZ member service

Background to Compost New Zealand

In May 2005 industry representatives met in Queenstown at a WasteMINZ Workshop. Over 50 workshop participants discussed key aspects of the sector and looked for a way ahead. Participants agreed to establish a sector group and work towards industry development.
A second workshop was held in Rotorua as part of the WasteMINZ conference in November 2005. This workshop was facilitated by David Hanlon, Resource Consulting Service in Australia. At the workshop participants discussed key issues within and affecting the industry. A basic process to develop a “roadmap” for the industry was worked through and priorities for the future determined. Eleven people volunteered to establish a steering committee for the organics recycling industry.

Having Compost NZ as part of WasteMINZ means:

  • Significantly reduced costs for setting up the organisation
  • Administration staff, financial systems, governance and information technology already available
  • Established links to industry, local and central government and research organisations
  • Strong links to international bodies performing similar projects
  • Access to project funding

Membership

Compost New Zealand is a sector group of WasteMINZ. All members are eligible to participate in the sector group programme either as general members or as steering committee members.

General members are those who may not wish to have a huge involvement in the running of the group but do want to be up to date with what is taking place in the industry. General members may include industry stakeholders such as local and central government staff, researchers and consultants.

The steering committee manages Compost New Zealand. People on the steering committee usually have an active participation in projects such as development of industry guides/standards, research and marketing directions. WasteMINZ welcomes involvement in this programme from corporate business, small business, non governmental organisations and individuals.
