Introducing the landfill and residual waste management sector group

A sector group of WasteMINZ

Landfill and residual waste sector group – who are we?

The WasteMINZ landfill and residual waste management sector group is the support organisation for the landfill and residual waste processing sector in New Zealand.
The group has been established by WasteMINZ members from waste companies, consultancies and councils throughout New Zealand.
The pages in this section of the website will provide you with information on the strategic plan, annual plan and the work programme that is in place.

Our aim

The aim of the group is to promote industry best practice. We do this by providing information on best practice for:

  • Locating landfills
  • Designing landfills
  • Operating landfills
  • Managing landfills
  • Closing and monitoring landfills

Information is also provided on residual waste facilities such as transfer stations and materials recovery facilities.

Landfills and New Zealand

The standard of management for the majority of landfills in New Zealand is high. The sector group aims to ensure that this high standard of management is consistently applied throughout New Zealand. The group wants to do this by sharing technical knowledge and through the landfill award scheme.

The number of landfills in New Zealand has reduced considerably over the last 20 years. From a high of over 380 local landfills there are now around 60 landfills. A large number of these landfills are highly engineered regional facilities.
