Regional WMMP Waste Planner – fixed-term position (12-months)

The Wellington Region Waste Minimisation and Management Plan (WMMP) requires a dedicated and experienced officer to plan, research, drive and deliver on the WMMP’s regional actions. This 12-month fixed-term role will focus on the development and delivery of a regional waste bylaw. This process is well underway and requires the right person to see it through to completion.

The Wellington Region WMMP (2017-2023) has an ambitious target to reduce the total quantity of waste sent to Class 1 landfills across the region from 600 kilograms per person per annum to 400 kilograms per person by 2026. The WMMP outlines a number of regional and local level actions for the eight territorial authorities that combined have the potential to achieve the WMMP target.

The development of new regionally consistent waste bylaw provisions underpins our ability to achieve the WMMP’s waste reduction targets and forms a critical part of the regulatory framework for waste in the Wellington Region. This project is the currently a top priority for the region.

The WMMP Regional Officer will be required to self-manage, travel throughout the region, lead consultation with industry stakeholders and have a flexible approach to hours and working at other Council offices as required. A productive work ethic and a wide range of skills will be necessary to be effective in this role, including policy and bylaw development, stakeholder engagement, project management, strategic planning, and the ability to assimilate a wide range of technical information into concise and accurate reporting, including reports for Councillors.

As the bylaw project is already underway, we are looking for an experienced professional who can jump in and be effective immediately. As such we are offering a competitive salary. This position is funded by all nine councils of the Wellington region and is a 12-month fixed-term contract (maternity cover). The primary office location for this position will be at Wellington City Council’s Southern Landfill administration building with desks available at each of the region’s councils. The role will be directed by the WMMP Steering Group in terms of work tasking and priorities. The WMMP Steering Group includes senior waste officer representation from the region’s Territorial Authorities.

This is a great opportunity and the successful applicant will be empowered to make a real difference in the region’s waste sector. If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you. To apply for this position, you must be eligible to work in New Zealand and hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence.
