The Government is introducing a National Environment Standard (NES) to better regulate tyres stored outdoors.

The new rules will ensure that tyres are stored responsibly on sites.

Cabinet recently approved the preparation of the NES with the regulations due to come into effect in 2021.

The proposed standards will require more than 20m(approximately 250 car tyres)stored outside to be set back from sensitive areas such as rivers and streams.

Outdoor storage of 100m3 of tyres (approximately 1250 car tyres) or more will require a resource consent, with exemptions for silage tyres and new tyres.
