Hon James Shaw, Minister of Climate Change has released Aotearoa New Zealand’ first emissions reduction plan, which will set the direction for climate action for the next 15 years. It will also set on a pathway to meet Aotearoa New Zealand’ 2050 net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and biogenic methane targets by implementing policies and strategies for specific sectors, including:

  • transport
  • energy
  • waste
  • building and construction
  • agriculture and forestry

The plan will also include:

  • a multi-sector strategy to meet emissions budgets and improve the ability of those sectors to adapt to the effects of climate change, and
  • ways to mitigate the impacts reducing emissions and increasing removals will have on people, including the funding for any mitigation action.

The first emissions reduction plan is due to be delivered by the end of May 2022.

Consultation opened 13 October 2021.  Closes 24 November 2021.
