In this member spotlight, we talk to Michelle Kazor, from Versity Limited (previously trading as Kazor & Associates)

"We can’t wait for government to solve our problems. Getting the right people in the right rooms for constructive, transparent conversations grounded in shared values is the best approach to shaping policy that works."

Tell us about your organisation

I’ve reinvigorated my consulting practice, specializing in strategy, policy, and investment advisory within the waste and resource efficiency sector. Specialisations:

  • Actionable research, policy and business analysis, including feasibility studies, investment scrutiny, and resource recovery business case development
  • Crafting business and organisational strategies, with emphasis on ESG factors
  • Developing and implementing effective policies, programmes, and partnerships
  • Government relations advice and advocacy; and assistance with funding applications
  • Strategic review and evaluation aimed at driving improvement and maximising impact through compelling storytelling

Why did you want to join WasteMINZ?

I’ve been a member in different capacities since 2000 – first as manager of the waste & environmental services unit at a large local authority, then for fifteen years as a consultant, and most recently representing central government as the Director for waste investment at the Ministry for the Environment. I’ve enjoyed watching the organisation grow and change over that period. WasteMINZ continues to be a great way to connect and communicate across what has become an increasingly broad sector. I hope to get more involved in sector group activities and policy advocacy, as well as giving advice to clients.

What topic/issue are you most passionate about when it comes to waste, resource recovery or contaminated land?

We can’t wait for government to solve our problems. Getting the right people in the right rooms for constructive, transparent conversations grounded in shared values is the best approach to shaping policy that works. I’d like to facilitate this conversation across the waste sector ‘trifecta’ (commercial waste industry, local authorities and the charitable network) and deliver advice to government on what needs to change to enable better resource recovery and resource efficiency.

An even better question…what I’m most frustrated with: three-yearly election cycles leading to vote-buying short-termism, policy flip-flops, and strategic indecision, further exacerbating crisis-level infrastructure underinvestment.
One of Michelle's fav artists - Florence & the Machine

What are you reading or listening to right now?

I’m a musician. Nowadays I listen to whatever Spotify and its brilliant analytics decide to feed me. On repeat at the moment…a bit of Vance Joy, Royel Otis, Kings of Leon, the National, and Florence & the Machine (The dog days are over!).

Describe your perfect day outside of work.

Most days start with walking the dog at the beach. I’m also an active relaxer and love to travel. My husband and I recently bought a Ford Transit campervan after the youngest of our four young adult children went to university. We now spend many of our weekends cruising around, going for short hikes, visiting friends (or fixing the latest thing that has broken on the van ha ha). Any day spent with friends and family, or just having a laugh and doing work that matters is a good day.
