Compostable packaging is often promoted as a solution for a more circular economy – but is the system currently set up to deliver on that promise?
At the heart of the issue is a growing disconnect between what packaging being "compostable" actually means, how it's certified, consumer expectations, and the infrastructure and processing systems available to deal with it. A product may meet a compostability standard, but that doesn't necessarily mean there is a collection system or processing facility capable of accepting it – or that it will behave as expected in every real-world processing environment.
Join our panel discussion for an honest and practical conversation addressing some of the assumptions and challenges around compostable packaging, and how it fits within Aotearoa New Zealand’s organics and resource recovery systems.
