Aimy East is a sustainability leader specialising in circular economy solutions that
integrate behavioural science with practical waste system design. She has supported airports, local government, corporates, and tertiary institutions to cut landfill disposal, increase resource recovery, and embed behaviour change. Her work focuses on transforming food and material waste into resources that regenerate land and strengthen communities, demonstrating how practical onsite solutions can drive the circular economy in action.

Currents Beneath the Surface: A Kayaker’s Guide to Contaminated Land Consulting
In both contaminated land consulting and kayaking, Simon navigates complex systems, looks for subtle cues, plans methodically, and embraces the challenge of charting a course through uncertainty. His presentation explores the parallels between these worlds—where what lies beneath the surface often holds the key to understanding risk, making good decisions, and staying upright through the waves.
About Simon:
Simon is a Technical Director at e3Scientific, where he leads contaminated land
investigations with a hands-on approach. Prior to joining e3Scientific in 2019, Simon spent nearly ten years at the Otago Regional Council, where he developed contaminated land management strategy, oversaw site investigations, maintained spatial registers of hazardous industry data, and managed government-funded remediation projects.
His work continues to support local authorities across Otago and Southland, as well as a diverse range of private and public sector clients. Simon’s approach to environmental consulting is grounded in precision, resilience, and a deep respect for the environment, qualities honed from countless hours sitting in small boats. A lifelong kayaker, Simon has paddled rivers, lakes and ocean around the world. He has competed internationally in whitewater racing before turning his attention to expedition paddling, leading to several first descents in Central Asia. More recently, he has completed several self-supported sea kayak journeys, including a circumnavigation of Rakiura and trip along Fiordland’s coast from Milford Sound to Te Waewae Bay.
