In 2014/ 15 food waste from a total of 1,402 households across 12 different councils in New Zealand was separated and weighed. Altogether, across all council audits, a total of 25,330 food samples were weighed, categorised, and recorded to determine the nature and quantity of food thrown away in New Zealand kerbside rubbish collections. The report found that $872 million worth of edible food is thrown away every year equivalent to 122,547 tonnes.
