The New Zealand Recycling Symbols have been translated into Te Reo and can be viewed here. It was decided that Para Kore would continue on to create a broader list of zero waste words, knowing that sometimes resource recovery centres and waste educators would like to use te reo Māori but are unsure of what the translations are. Para Kore approached He Kupenga Hao i te Reo, who already had extensive translations of zero waste words and they kindly agreed to help with this project. Auckland Council’s Waste Minimisation and Innovation Fund is also contributing to some of the costs of this project.
The attached word list English to Māori has been prepared by He Kupenga Hao i te Reo and Para Kore Marae Incorporated.
We are reaching out nationally for feedback. Firstly, from those within the resource recovery industry to identify whether there are any additional English words pertaining to recycling, reducing waste, closing the loop or zero waste that you would like translated. Secondly, feedback is sought from te reo Māori speakers to check the suggested translations .
Please send any feedback to: firstname.lastname@example.org before 01 June 2018.
Once the word lists (English to Māori, Māori to English) have been finalised copies will be available on the Para Kore and WasteMINZ websites.
