Presentation title: The horror of 240 litre wheeled bins
Section 42 of the WMA requires Territorial Authorities to promote effective and efficient waste management and minimisation. Data showing the clear impact of different collection approaches is valuable in developing effective policy and strategy that will deliver waste minimisation outcomes. This paper presents data from a range of localities and collection systems, including both council and private collections. The analysis isolates the impact of large collection containers (such as 240 L MGBs) on the quantity of residual waste that is collected and shows the impact of container size on both the quantity of materials and the types of materials collected. It is clear that there is a strong relationship between the size of the container and the amount (and type) of material that is collected. The paper concludes by suggesting a number ways forward to constrain the quantity of material in household collections.
