Presentation title: Workplace behavioural safety – men & women behaving badly
Over the past 5 – 8 years, the number of deaths in Industry has remained fairly static; however, in the last 12 months, we have seen a sudden rise in Serious Harm incidents in industry that leave Safety Professionals asking the question, ‘Why is this happening in the face of so much publicity and education on safety over the last 15 + years?’ Within the field of occupational safety and heath, many efforts have been made to improve safety in the workplace. These efforts have focused upon legislation, engineering failure, safety awareness campaigns, safety training and unsafe acts. Taken as a whole, these efforts have not always been successful in impacting upon accident rates. Traditionally, the legislative approach has not made much of an impact, simply because the resources necessary to police or enforce the situation have not always been forthcoming. ‘Why have all the above approaches not been as successful as they could have been?’ Is it a case of Men and Women behaving badly or is it a Safety Culture within NZ? In the wake of the Pike River Tragedy what can we expect now as we attempt to learn the lesson and as we move to an Australian style of H & S Management? All will be revealed in this engaging and informative presentation by a health and safety professional with more than 30 years experience of working in Australia and the Pacific.
