Compostable packaging is accepted from approved commercial facilities, who have presented proof of their packaging certification, with collections carried out by an Envirofert approved contractor.

Acceptance criteria:

In general, Envirofert will accept ‘compostable packaging’

  • made of potato starch, corn starch, wood or wood pulp such as cardboard packaging,
  • made of poly lactic acid such as plates, cutlery and cups 
  • cutlery made of wood or bamboo or PLA

Envirofert will accept ‘compostable packaging’ that is certified under the European Standard EN13432 or the Australian standard AS4736, which is the European Standard plus an earthworm toxicity test.

Envirofert reserve the right to reject any packaging that is presented as ‘compostable packaging’, even if certified under these standards, if found to be detrimental in any way to the Envirofert composting methods, or to Envirofert compost products.

Envirofert will not accept packaging that is

  • made of non-biodegradable plastic,
  • has a plastic layer incorporated
  • has plastic as a partial component
  • or is labelled as bio-oxy-degradable plastic
  • packaging that is contaminated with human bio-solids such as disposable nappies.

Delivery:

Envirofert will accept delivery of compostable packaging via approved waste companies, by negotiation or from individuals.

  •  Envirowaste
  • Waste Management

One-off deliveries can be made to Envirofert at 74 Geraghtys Road, Tuakau, by negotiation e.g. from a large one-off event, under the same conditions for what is acceptable as ‘compostable packaging’. Minimum volume of one tonne per delivery.

Individuals (as opposed to waste companies or businesses) can drop off compostable packaging in person at our retail site at 8 Harrisville Road, Tuakau, from 10am to 4pm, Thursday to Sunday, with no minimum volume.
