Kaicycle

Facility Name: Kaicycle Composting

Contact: compost@kaicycle.org.nz

Website: kaicycle.org.nz/compost-collection

Address: 5 Hospital Rd, Newtown, Wellington 6021

Region Served: Certain parts of central Wellington. Please visit our website for a map of our collection zone.

Kaicycle provides a small-scale organic waste collection service for local households and office spaces who produce up to 60 litres of compostable waste per week. Our focus is on diverting food waste from landfill and recycling these nutrients back into local soils. As compostable packaging is nutrient-poor compared to food waste, our stance is to minimise the amount we receive while supporting our customers in making more sustainable choices. We only accept approved compostable packaging from our customers; we do not accept deliveries from other waste companies or larger-scale organic waste producers. We generally do not accept event waste.

Acceptance Criteria

Kaicycle accepts the following which they have approved for acceptance at their facility:

  • Compostable coffee cups — must be from Biochoice, Biopak, Bioware, Ecoware, Eco Soulife, Friendlypak or Innocent Packaging. NB: We cannot process compostable coffee cup lids so please send to landfill.
  • Compostable bin liners/bags — subject to inspection
  • Compostable takeaway containers made of bagasse/sugarcane, craft board, bamboo, pine, potato starch, wheat starch. Containers must have either no lining or PLA lining. Must be from Biochoice, Biopak, Bioware, Ecoware, Eco Soulife, Friendlypak or Innocent Packaging
  • Unbleached paper towels/tissues
  • Bamboo/wood utensils/cutlery

Kaicycle will not accept:

  • Non-compostable products or those containing non-compostable components
  • Bio-oxy-degradable products
  • Hard PLA/CPLA products, e.g., ‘compostable’ coffee cup lids, cutlery, plates and takeaway containers
  • Any material contaminated with human or pet biosolids, e.g., soiled nappy liners, dog poo in compostable plastic bags

Kaicycle reserves the right to reject any packaging that is presented as ‘compostable packaging’, even if listed as an acceptable input if found to be detrimental in any way to the Kaicycle composting methods or to Kaicycle compost products. We will accept new packaging or untested packaging on a case-by-case basis to determine whether it is fit for our system.

Kaicycle accepts limited amounts of contamination but reserves the right to end customer subscriptions if persistent. Contamination such as plastics significantly compromises the quality of our compost.

Delivery:

Kaicycle does not accept delivery of compostable waste. Kaicycle is a subscription model for compostables collection from household/office space customers.

Individual members of the public are not able to drop off their compostable products in person.
