The Government has announced six priority products for regulated product stewardship under the Waste Minimisation Act. Each priority product has between a year to three years to apply for product stewardship scheme accreditation, noting any regulations required for effectiveness. Now the priority products have been announced co-designed product stewardship schemes will either begin, or be consulted on if the design has already been completed. Co-design means that proposed schemes are designed by stakeholders with input from industry, local government, iwi and community groups.
Each priority product will reach the following milestones (which can be met in a different order):
