In August 2017, Waikato District Council partnered with Xtreme Zero Waste and the Ministry for the Environment to offer Raglan a fully funded kerbside food waste collection service.
However, in 2019, Waikato District Council undertook community consultation on a proposed targeted rate being paid by Raglan residents for weekly Raglan food waste collection service, which was not accepted.
Xtreme Zero Waste remains committed to the importance of minimising and diverting food waste and is now actively fundraising $120,000, to enable the continuation of the Raglan weekly kerbside food waste collection for the next 12 months.
One fundraising stream is through the hosting of study tours. Xtreme Zero Waste invites attendees of the WasteMINZ conference to visit their centre. This is your opportunity to see the kerbside collections system, the hardware they use and the unique hot composting unit they designed and built. You will also see the Xtreme Innovation hub which diverts over 75% of the community’s solid waste.
Here are the tour details:
Participants will leave from Claudelands Exhibition and Events centre at the conclusion of the WasteMINZ Conference.
Transport to Raglan will either be on the Xtreme Zero Waste organised bus, subject to demand, or via your private car if you don’t want to return to Hamilton following the tour. WasteMINZ will provide a takeaway lunch for conference delegates.
Dallas Rangi Butler, Liz Stanway and their team will welcome you at the Xtreme Innovation Hub, 186 Te Hutewai Road, RD2, Raglan 3296, and they will take you through their facilities and share their experiences and knowledge.
The tour will leave Claudelands at 1pm and is expected to return to Claudelands at approximately 5pm.
The cost for the tour is $200 + GST, which is payable directly to Xtreme Zero Waste. The money will go towards their funding raising efforts to keep the food waste collection going.
Please RSVP via [email protected], and advise if you will require assistance with transport.
Liz Stanway, from Xtreme Zero Waste, is speaking at the WasteMINZ Conference on Thursday, 26 September 2019 on the success of the Raglan kerbside collection and Horizontal Composting Unit. If you would like to learn more about their processes, make sure you take this opportunity.
