In this member spotlight, we talk to Roy Constable, managing director of Blueskies Civil. Roy has been in the industry for 40 years, and says he's passionate about growing, learning and becoming more attuned to the environment and the people that inhabit our planet.

"We are the guardians of the world we will pass on to our children, so we owe it to them to hand it over in the best possible shape."

Tell us about your organisation

Blueskies Civil was established to specifically service the landfill construction industry. With change being such a constant in terms regulation and technology, focusing our resources in this one sector has given us the opportunity to test and achieve some quite remarkable results. We provide full service contract management depending on client requirements – from supervisory and work fulfilment, quality and cost control, through to engineer oversight where required.

Why did you want to join WasteMINZ?

The waste management industry has come a long way. Landfills don’t even remotely resemble the ones that I knew growing up. I’m constantly in awe of what we’ve achieved as an industry, but there are still many areas for us to grow, learn and become more attuned to the environment and the people that inhabit our planet. Joining WasteMINZ is an opportunity to hear and learn from like-minded people, and explore ways to continuously grow in our role - and share what I’ve learnt along the way.

What topic/issue are you most passionate about when it comes to waste, resource recovery or contaminated land?

I’m passionate about keeping up to date with and exploring new and better ways to complete the job of building areas for the continuous flow of waste in NZ to be well contained, with the absolute minimum of environmental damage. We are the guardians of the world we will pass on to our children, so we owe it to them to hand it over in the best possible shape.

What are you reading or listening to right now?

Right now I’m reading Sir Michael Hill's autobiography – Toughen Up. Talk about battles, but I love his sense of service – in particular customer service. Only halfway through, but so far a good read.

Describe your perfect day outside of work.

On a boat, preferably catching fish! Construction season doesn’t lend itself to lots of free time, but when I have it, I prefer to spend it on the water. Preferably with my family.
