Site Visits
You have the opportunity to choose between two different site visits throughout Wellington.
These are both held at the same time, after sessions finish on Thursday, 21 May - leaving from TSB Arena at 1pm (a packed lunch will be provided) and arriving back at approximately 5pm.
Seats are limited so get in quick!

Join Wellington City Council staff on a tour of the Southern Landfill site, where experts will talk you through the operations and the development of the full landfill site including:
-
Tip Shop and Recycle Centre
-
Transfer station
-
Compost plant
-
Dewatering plant
-
Closed landfill sites
-
and much more.
The tour gives a history of waste operations at the Southern Landfill, looks at the volume and types of waste being sent to landfill, the environmental monitoring onsite, and the future of the Southern Landfill.
The bus will drive around this location from point to point, so limited walking required – however closed shoes are necessary.
Many of you have heard about the Southern Landfill Extension Project with the unique piggyback design, although this will not necessarily be visible, questions may be answered!
The bus will return to the TSB Arena via the airport, for those who need to catch a flight.

Silverstream landfill
This field trip will visit EDL’s pilot asbestos destruction plant located at the Silverstream Landfill in Wellington.
With many locations in New Zealand and around the world facing ongoing asbestos disposal challenges, this visit will showcase a cutting-edge mechanochemical technology that renders asbestos in legacy materials inert, producing a fine powder suitable for reuse in concrete applications and other industrial uses.
EDL representatives will be onsite to explain the process, demonstrate the equipment, and discuss how this pilot facility is paving the way toward a world-leading solution for asbestos treatment.
