How many batteries are in your home?
Go on a battery hunt at your home and let us know how many you find.
Batteries are a part of everyday life. You’ll find them in everyday items like your smartphone, laptop, electric toothbrush and remote-controlled toys as well as in all those gimmicky home help gadgets we all love to buy.
Did you know, some estimates suggest that the average home has over 100 batteries, with up to a third of those being flat or unusable.
We want your help to find out how many batteries are in your house. Download and print our battery hunt worksheet (or online workbook if you prefer) and complete it room by room for your home.
Before you start, remember to have a guess at how many you think you'll find!
Our competition has now closed, but you can still enter your results below!

Remember to dispose of your batteries responsibly!
Batteries thrown in kerbside rubbish and recycle bins are one of the leading causes of fires in collection trucks and at landfill or recycling facilities. This includes all products containing batteries like vapes, old toys, worn light up shoes and dead escooter batteries.
Never bin batteries! Take them to your local battery recycling facility so they can be processed correctly - see the WasteMINZ battery collections map or your local council website for locations all across New Zealand.
Small Battery Environmental Scan
The great battery hunt is part of the small battery environmental scan project WasteMINZ is undertaking with Eunomia to provide an overview of the challenges facing the small battery sector in Aotearoa New Zealand - from the point of manufacturing to end of life and disposal.
More information about this project is available here.
