3-9 May: International Compost Awareness Week

Compost! Feed the soil that feeds us

Did you know, an estimated 300,000 tonnes of food scraps is produced annually in NZ, most of which still go to landfill?
This International Composting Awareness Week, we are encouraging households and communities to explore the benefits of composting and start your composting journey! Instead of viewing food scraps and organic materials (such as lawn and garden clippings) as waste, we should view it as a resource.

The WasteMINZ Organic Materials Sector Group has developed a campaign toolkit to raise awareness of the value of compost and the extremely important role it plays promoting the health of our soil, ensuring it continues to provide the food, clean water, and resilience that all life depends on. The toolkit is designed to help share inspiring stories aligned with this year’s theme.

Your support is key to the success of our campaign. By sharing messages during International Compost Awareness Week, you will help raise the awareness of the value of compost as nature’s solution to organic waste in New Zealand!

Why should you take part in International Compost Awareness Week?

Your organisation can:

  • Showcase sustainability leadership by visibly supporting an international initiative promoting the importance of compost and the critical role it plays in soil health.

  • Share your stories - use the week to share your good news stories, great initiatives, pilots and trials.

  • Super charge efforts to implement more composting and organic waste diversion initiatives in your organisation and your region.

Learn more about International Compost Awareness Week, including an events calendar and fascinating stories about compost below.
