In this member spotlight, we talk to Maria Lamb a Waste Minimisation Officer at Waimakariri District Council with 10 years of experience in the industry.
Like other councils we provide a wide range of services for the wider community. We’re focused on enhancing environmental, social, economic and cultural wellbeing to all in the district. This is obtainable with different units being able to offer their expertise in chosen field. Our team is Solid Waste where we promote waste minimisation, resource recovery, highlight the importance of utilising the wheelie bin services correctly and in general aim to get everyone rethinking their rubbish!
Why did you want to join WasteMINZ?
I wanted to connect with other people who are driven and passionate about sustainability, waste reduction and enviro issues, WasteMINZ is the perfect platform for this. We are all fighting the good fight to make a significant and powerful difference for the benefit of our land, our people, our future. They say it takes a village so by surrounding myself with a community of insightful people, it’s great knowing that a support network is available.
What topic/issue are you most passionate about when it comes to waste, resource recovery or contaminated land?
Protecting our environment has always been a priority of mine, but this probably hit home harder when I had children. Wanting to demonstrate kaitiakitanga, I organised clean ups at their local primary school, which soon extended to wider community clean ups and the rest is history. From then on, my path of following Sustainability and Resource Recovery was set in irreversible motion.
What are you reading or listening to right now?
I’ve been on a mission to hike/tramp as many peaks as possible past few years, so currently reading a series of guidebooks written by local Kiwis. My go to music when the going gets tough out there is Sia. When you’re alone and climbing 2,000m in winter, her music gives me the extra push.
Describe your perfect day outside of work
My perfect day when not working, entails a full tank in the car, backpack with all the necessary gear and some yummy snacks of course. Then usually I’ll head into the wild outdoors to bag some new Peaks. My time is divided between Arthurs Pass National Park, Craigieburn Forest Park, Hakatere Conservation Park and the local Christchurch Port Hills (when time restricted).
