The Ministry for Primary Industries, the Poultry Industry Association New Zealand, the Egg Producers Federation New Zealand, and WasteMINZ invite representatives from the poultry industry, composting operators, waste management providers, organics processors, and others involved in bird flu mortality management to join our webinar, which will focus on composting as a viable and sustainable option for managing H5N1 mortalities and waste.
In the United States, approximately 85% of bird-flu-affected poultry were disposed of through composting, and this proportion is expected to increase. International experience suggests composting can be a highly effective, biosecure, and sustainable option for managing poultry mortalities during an avian influenza outbreak.
Building awareness and readiness across the poultry and waste management sectors is critical. Understanding the operational and resource requirements of composting before an outbreak can help support a timely and effective response when needed.
During the session, we will:
- Share local composting case studies and lessons learned from permitting, establishing, and managing composting operations
- Highlight international experiences and key learnings from composting avian influenza-affected birds
- Discuss the benefits, practical considerations, and potential role of composting as a disposal option during a disease response
